Do Good for the Glory of God - Part 5

The grand opening of the restaurant was held in November of 2019, just before the COVID 19 epidemic

God provided the staff of volunteers who all have a role to play in the running and operating of the restaurant.  The only paid staff are the young people who help in various ways.  The ministries He wanted are taking shape.  Even during COVID, the restaurant is flourishing.  Surely, He is going to say, to Karen, “Well done good and faithful servant,” but He doesn’t.  No, He sends the Holy Spirit to encourage Karen to do the next phase of His vision, the splash park, rosary walk and the stations.

John 16:13   When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

Acts: 14: 22 They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.”

1 Peter 1: 13-15  Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good?  But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats]; do not be frightened].  But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

Do Good for the Glory of God - Part 4

God has no limits for those who trust Him

It is so difficult to trust God. We only know what is humanly possible and when God asks us to trust Him, we can’t seem to do it. Karen had experienced God’s divine intervention many times and yet trust was elusive. Trust came as Karen and Jay experienced God’s glory, only then did they surrender completely.

As children we learned to trust that our father would catch us if we jumped off a high pedestal. We learned as babies that he was always there to catch us. As adults we do not have repeated examples of God catching us. We need to think of ourselves as children leaping off a high pedestal into our Father’s arms.

Matthew 18: 3 And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 6: 33-34 “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Hebrews 4: 7 again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Do Good for the Glory of God - Part 3

Spiritual Warfare, Obedience & Trust

All of us are tested by God but few are put to the ultimate test. In Part 3 God puts Karen to the test.

Genesis 22: 1-2 The Testing of Abraham. Some time afterward, God put Abraham to the test and said to him: Abraham! “Here I am!” he replied. Then God said: Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There offer him up as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.

Paul went into the desert to pray. Karen’s desert was the church where she pleads for help to remove the cross she is being asked to bear.

Mk 1:12-13 At once the Spirit drove him out into the desert, and he remained in the desert for 40 days, tempted by the devil. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.

1 Peter 5: 8-10 Be sober and vigilant. Your opponent the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, steadfast in faith, knowing that your fellow believers throughout the world undergo the same sufferings. The God of all grace who called you to his eternal glory through Christ Jesus will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you after you have suffered a little.

Jesus, asks the Father to take this cup from Him, as does Karen.

Mark 14: 36 "Father," he prayed, "my Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet not what I want, but what you want."

This parable is for all of us.

Luke 9: 22-25 And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.” Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?

Do Good for the Glory of God - Part 2

The Trinity, Trust & Obedience

In Part 2 of her story you will experience the Trinity as Karen, the reluctant servant, discovers the power of the Holy Spirit within herself and others, as God carries out His will. She calls on Jesus Christ in the Eucharist and in adoration to find courage, but it is God the Father who puts her to the test. When we pray the Our Father, we say, “Deliver us from evil.” In the original text it was, “Do not put us to the test.”

Despite all of God’s signs and the incredible interventions of the Spirit, it comes down to free will and how we view the First Commandment. Where does obedience to God rank in relationship to family, children, grandchildren and a comfortable life?

The following verses may shed some light on this part of her story. How do you visualize the Trinity?

Exodus 19:9 (NIV) The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.

Exodus 33:9 As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the LORD spoke with Moses.

A Reluctant Servant Tells Her Story

Some people ask how I came to know about the Do Good Restaurant, which opened in November of 2019. It happened in April 2020, when my friend, Chris Bramlage, told me about the Do Good, in Osgood, OH. At the time we were discussing how God asked me to design a website and post true stories to encourage people to look for Jesus in their lives.

I called the restaurant the next week and Karen, the owner, was open to considering an interview. After a couple of attempts, we were able to meet in October 2020 for her story. After giving Karen a brief background about myself, she asked, “Does the Holy Spirit speak to you?” I said, “Sometimes, usually in the middle of the night.” Then I asked her if she had looked at my website or my book. She said, “No.” I said, “Well why did you agree to see me then?” She said, “Because the Holy Spirit told me to.”

The following posting will be a bit different from previous ones. The reason is that it is still evolving. For example, when I first contacted Karen in April, God had not yet approached her to add the splash park, rosary walk or the stations of the cross.

Starting on Thursday of the first week in Lent, we will share weekly continuations of Karen’s fascinating story based upon her encounters with God, the power of prayer in adoration and the intervention of the Holy Spirit.

Exodus 4-10-13 Moses said to Yahweh, 'Please, my Lord, I have never been eloquent, even since you have spoken to your servant, for I am slow and hesitant of speech.’ ‘Who gave a person a mouth?' Yahweh said to him. 'Who makes a person dumb or deaf, gives sight or makes blind? Is it not I, Yahweh? Now go, I shall help you speak and instruct you what to say.

Jonah 1: 1-3 The word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” But Jonah ran away from the LORD and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the LORD.

Why Does God Make People with Down's Syndrome?

There are two stories: Carol Frient’s son Jacob and Joe & Sharon Olson’s son Matthew.

My friend Jim Frient sent me a letter from, Carol, his Sister-in-law. His brother Jack died from cancer two years ago. In Carol and Jack, God made very devout people who tried to live as Christ lived. They have 11 children. Three with special needs were adopted and are still living at home. Two are blind and of course Jacob about whom this story is written. I am sure Carol could share many stories about any of her children, but she thought Jacob’s story could help people understand that the soul is what is most important.

The second story is from my friends Joe and Sharon Olson and their son Matthew. The name Matthew means, “gift from God.” I myself have not met Matthew, but my daughter and grand children have met Matthew and they will never forget him.

The Lord gave me these stories to remind us that even before we are born God gave us a soul and there is a design and purpose for everyone’s life. No one knows what could have been God’s plan for those who were aborted.

Jeremiah 1: 5

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I dedicated you, a prophet to the nations I appointed you.

Reflections on 2020, A Year Like No Other

Joy to the world our Lord and Savior has come to redeem us

Crib Pix.jpg

Matthew 1: 23

Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.”

Luke 2: 14

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

The past year it seems we have all gone through an abundance of trials and blessings and some of us had more time to read, pray and reflect.

Here are some thoughts that came to mind this year:

The world is smaller than we thought, and we are all connected to it.

Family and friends are more important than things and events.

Every hug you give and receive is a gift from God and should be cherished.

Internal peace and hope for the future come through Him.

God is with us, so where should our focus be? This song comes to mind.

Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me
Let There Be Peace on Earth
The peace that was meant to be

With God as our Father
Brothers all are we
Let me walk with my brother
In perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me
Let this be the moment now.

With ev'ry step I take
Let this be my solemn vow
To take each moment and live
Each moment in peace eternally
Let there be peace on earth
And let it begin with me.

Patience

It has been a while since I posted a story. The reason is that I have been involved in writing an incredible story on the Do Good Restaurant in Osgood, OH. The story is about Karen Homan and God’s desire for her to build a restaurant for His Glory. The Lord has not allowed me to publish the story yet. He is teaching me patience which is not one of my virtues.

God was pursuing Karen, who did not initially want to do what He asked of her. I on the other hand, have been pursuing God to allow me to tell her story. What is extremely hard to learn is that God is in control. You can’t run from Him nor can you push Him.

During Advent, prepare yourself, your mind, heart and soul by discovering your destiny. Included is a list of virtues at the end of the destiny tab on the website to help you consider the gifts God has given you for His purposes and something to pray for if you lack some of the virtues you desire. As you check off the list of virtues, ask yourself. “How do I or can I use these virtues I have to advance the kingdom of God?”

The story, if released, will reveal the power of the Holy Spirit, the power of prayer, overcoming fear, obedience and true knowledge that God is in control. Maybe you will also get a better understanding of the Trinity, as I did.

Most people want to know their destiny, but with free will, may decide not to spend time thinking about it. Karen had to decide if she wanted to fulfill God’s request and build a restaurant. She had her free will, but was given a verse from the bible, John 3: 36, and after reading it she made her decision. Look it up.

Going Full Circle

I became interested in Jan’s story about her father when at a neighborhood gathering she told me her Father’s last words were, “It is so beautiful.” He had a glimpse of heaven, which we can only imagine, but his last words give us reassurance that there indeed is something beyond this life.

Jan went on to tell me that it was not until his later years that he reconnected to his Christian roots. Since he died at age 92, I was wondering when and how that happened. Here is her story. She calls it, “Going Full Circle.”

Hope, Joy, Sorrow & Love

Tears and memories come from this beautiful story of faith, hope, and answered prayers. God gave Kevin four gifts at birth - devout parents, a wonderful disposition, a smile, and a beautiful heart. The heart was visible and expressed in his smile and disposition, even in the most difficult of times. It is why he touched so many to the very end and why he was so loved. His destiny was to be with the Lord.

As his life was slipping away, Kevin asked Shirley, “Why doesn’t the Lord just take me?” Shirley said, “I don’t know, but He loves you infinitely more than I do, and I can’t imagine how that can be.”

Shirley and Dan’s consolation is knowing that life here on earth is short compared to eternity and that they would now be sharing it with their son in the future. In the meantime, the Lord gave them a daughter-in-law and a beautiful granddaughter to love and pray for.

One thing that resonated with me in writing this story is that, no matter what your religious affiliation is, the Lord evaluates the heart.

Matthew 5:8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

Tom's Conversion

Tom’s Conversion story is being posted under the True Stories tab on the website.

Everyone’s conversion story is different, but a common thread is that each person is drawn by a desire to know Christ. This desire comes from within by a seed planted by the Holy Spirit or by encounters with people God puts in their path. It is usually a series of incidents orchestrated by God. Each individual has the power to act or to ignore the Spirit’s prompting.

Malachi: 3-1

"I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come," says the LORD Almighty.

Lucious Newsome

Some called him a good man, others a living saint and still others a disciple of Christ for the poor, but no one who ever met him will ever forget him.

Under the True Story tab, I am sharing a few stories about Lucious Newsom which have been passed on to me by men in my small Cursillo Group at Holy Spirit at Geist parish. Several of the men in the group had helped him in his ministry. It will be 12 years today that Lucious died at age 93. Lucious was one with the Lord and he exuded God’s love to everyone he met.

He reminds us, that the older we get, the more wisdom we gain and the closer we are to seeing Christ. Lucious touched thousands in the last 20 years of his life here in Indianapolis. Many of them have a story to tell.

The Mulligan

The Mulligan” story is being posted under, “True Stories,” on the website.

It is a fitting post because it reminds us that life is a journey. Like Bill, many of us are in the second half of our lives. Richard Rohr says everyone must struggle and wander through the first half before we discover the second half. Even most of the saints bounced around life before they had a conversion.

Maybe you have not yet felt God’s overwhelming love and presence in a Spiritual awakening. If you have had a conversion, you are in the process of becoming a mature Christian to mentor others. When you share your story, you encourage others to say, “Yes Lord,” when He asks them to leave their comfort zone and put into the deep.

If you studied the Circles in the book “On My Way,” you should be able to visualize and follow Bill’s progress toward heaven. I, like Bill, believe we do get a mulligan in this life as He has more for us to do for Him here on earth before He takes us home.

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GATHER, BUT WHAT YOU SCATTER

This has been around many, many times, but especially at these uncertain times it is enjoyable to have a story like this one to read.   This is not my story, but every time I read this a tear comes to my eye.

IT'S NOT WHAT YOU GATHER, BUT WHAT YOU SCATTER

I was at the corner grocery store buying some early potatoes... I noticed a small boy, delicate of bone and feature, ragged but clean, hungrily apprising a basket of freshly picked green peas.

I paid for my potatoes but was also drawn to the display of fresh green peas. I am a pushover for creamed peas and new potatoes.

Pondering the peas, I couldn't help overhearing the conversation between Mr. Miller (the store owner) and the ragged boy next to me.

'Hello Barry, how are you today?'

'H'lo, Mr. Miller. Fine, thank ya. Jus' admirin' them peas. They sure look good'

'They are good, Barry. How's your Ma?'    'Fine. Gittin' stronger alla' time.'    'Good. Anything I can help you with?'    'No, Sir. Jus' admirin' them peas.'    'Would you like to take some home?' asked Mr. Miller.

'No, Sir. Got nuthin' to pay for 'em with.'

'Well, what have you to trade me for some of those peas?'

'All I got's my prize marble here.'

'Is that right? Let me see it', said Miller.

'Here 'tis. She's a dandy.'

'I can see that. Hmm mmm, only thing is this one is blue and I sort of go for red. Do you have a red one like this at home?' the store owner asked.

'Not zackley but almost.'

'Tell you what. Take this sack of peas home with you and next trip this way let me look at that red marble'. Mr. Miller told the boy.

'Sure will. Thanks Mr. Miller.'

Mrs. Miller, who had been standing nearby, came over to help me.

With a smile she said, 'There are two other boys like him in our community, all three are in very poor circumstances. Jim just loves to bargain with them for peas, apples, tomatoes, or whatever.

When they come back with their red marbles, and they always do, he decides he doesn't like red after all and he sends them home with a bag of produce for a green marble or an orange one, when they come on their next trip to the store.'

I left the store smiling to myself, impressed with this man. A short time later I moved to Colorado, but I never forgot the story of this man, the boys, and their bartering for marbles.

Several years went by, each more rapid than the previous one.  Just recently I had occasion to visit some old friends in that Idaho community and while I was there learned that Mr. Miller had died. They were having his visitation that evening and knowing my friends wanted to go, I agreed to accompany them. Upon arrival at the mortuary we fell into line to meet the relatives of the deceased and to offer whatever words of comfort we could.

Ahead of us in line were three young men. One was in an army uniform and the other two wore nice haircuts, dark suits and white shirts...all very professional looking. They approached Mrs. Miller, standing composed and smiling by her husband's casket.

Each of the young men hugged her, kissed her on the cheek, spoke briefly with her and moved on to the casket. Her misty light blue eyes followed them as, one by one; each young man stopped briefly and placed his own warm hand over the cold pale hand in the casket. Each left the mortuary awkwardly, wiping his eyes.

Our turn came to meet Mrs. Miller. I told her who I was and reminded her of the story from those many years ago and what she had told me about her husband's bartering for marbles. With her eyes glistening, she took my hand and led me to the casket.

'Those three young men who just left were the boys I told you about.

They just told me how they appreciated the things Jim 'traded' them. Now, at last, when Jim could not change his mind about color or size....they came to pay their debt.'

'We've never had a great deal of the wealth of this world,' she confided, 'but right now, Jim would consider himself the richest man in Idaho ..'

With loving gentleness she lifted the lifeless fingers of her deceased husband. Resting underneath were three exquisitely shined red marbles.

The Moral:  We will not be remembered by our words, but by our kind deeds. Life is not measured by the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath.

Today I wish you a day of ordinary miracles ~ A fresh pot of coffee you didn't make yourself..

An unexpected phone call from an old friend.... Green stoplights on your way to work....

The fastest line at the grocery store....

A good sing-along song on the radio..

The Confession

This story is about the experience of confession while on a pilgrimage to Israel. It was memorable not only because of the location, but the insight received on God’s appreciation of my efforts to seek his help.

Confession is always a tricky subject, but it can be a positive experience, when you speak with the Lord about your weakness whether through a confessor or in private prayer. A weight is lifted and peace follows.

I think the Lord brought this story to mind to convey how important it is to Him to bring our weaknesses to Him for forgiveness. It is humbling because we face the fact that we confess the same sins over and over, only to finally realize we need some Spiritual help to overcome our human weaknesses. He in turn gives us the grace, love and strength to come into a closer relationship with Him.

Today’s blog post is to introduce The Confession story. It is newly posted on the On My Way website under the True Stories tab.

Romans 10:15

And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

The Good Man

The good man story will take you back to another time, a much simpler time. It was a time when the church was at the heart of a small community. Today the small town churches and ethnic communities are going away. Instead of many small congregations, we have mega churches. It is happening in all denominations.

Most times when we go to someone’s funeral, we share and celebrate a person’s life on earth. While we do not truly know a person’s heart or relationship with God, we have an idea by noting how they lived their lives. We always hope for the best for the soul, and our consolation comes in this bible verse.

John: 10-14

I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me.

This good man worshiped God by going to church and listening to the pastor. Today we, the laity, are needed to tell others about how God has shown His face in our lives. As in this story, when the end finally comes, perhaps there will be a special sign. The question is, will we share it to strengthen and lead others to a stronger belief in Christ or are we going to keep it to ourselves.

Today’s blog post is to introduce The Good Man story. It is newly posted on the On My Way website under the New Life tab.

Consolation in Memories

God Is always with us, watching over us and waiting for us to include him in our lives.  Often when we lose a loved one, He awakens us in unexpected ways to the fact that He was there with us all along.

Mostly we tuck these experiences away in our hearts.  That’s what I did and now I am sharing it with others to witness to His presence in our lives and give hope to those who believe in Him.

Today’s blog post is to introduce the Consolation in Memories story.  It is newly posted on the website under the New Life Stories tab.
